Motion graphics software: a short, honest map

“Motion graphics software” covers tools that have little in common. Picking well is mostly a matter of knowing which kind of job you have.

Four kinds of tool

Timeline editors, such as After Effects. Total control, steep learning curve, slow to revise.
Template tools, such as Canva. Fast and friendly; you fit your content to the template.
Video models, such as Runway. Generated footage; not built for exact text or numbers.
Code-driven tools. The video is a file a program writes, so it can be regenerated and corrected exactly.

When code-driven wins

When the video is made from a document, when the numbers must be right, when you will make the same kind of video every week, or when someone will ask you to change one figure the night before.
