Claude and video: what it can actually do
People ask whether Claude can edit video. The short answer: it cannot trim your footage in a chat window, and it can build a whole explainer from scratch if the video is made of text, charts and shapes.
What works
- Explainers, lessons and updates built from a document: titles, numbers, charts, comparisons, quotes.
- Narration and a music bed, timed to the scenes.
- Edits by instruction: “make scene three shorter”, “change 62% to 64%”.
- Fine edits on a timeline: trim, move and retime clips in the open-source HyperFrames Studio.
What does not
- Cutting, colour grading or stabilising footage you shot.
- Generating realistic footage or people. That is a different kind of model.
- Lip-synced avatars.
When to use what
For footage, use a video editor. For generated footage, a video model. For anything that is really a document turned into motion, code-driven video is faster to make and far easier to correct.
Questions
Can Claude Code run FFmpeg on my clips?
Yes. A coding agent can run FFmpeg commands to cut, join or convert files. That is useful, and it is a different job from designing an explainer.
Can I put my own clip in one of these videos?
Yes, as a scene you write yourself. The composition is HTML, so a video element can sit in it.
